Prabowo Sets Up Director General Of Law Enforcement For Energy And Mineral Resources

By srirahayu@insightinnews.com The administration of President Prabowo Subianto has officially established the Directorate General of Law Enforcement (Gakkum) to enhance oversight and legal enforcement in the energy and mineral resources sector. The creation of the Directorate General of Gakkum is outlined in Presidential Regulation Number 169 of 2024 concerning the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, which was enacted by President Prabowo Subianto on November 5, 2024. The establishment of Gakkum aims to serve as a concrete measure by the government to combat the increasingly prevalent practice of Illegal Mining (PETI) across various regions in Indonesia. Gakkum will report directly to the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources and will be led by a Director General. This new directorate is also tasked with formulating and implementing legal enforcement policies in the energy and mineral resources sectors. According to Article 24, "The Directorate General of Law Enforcement for Energy and Mineral Resources is responsible for the formulation and implementation of policies in the field of legal enforcement for energy and mineral resources," as cited on Thursday, November 7, 2024. Furthermore, Article 25 specifies several primary functions of Gakkum, including: a. Formulating policies related to prevention, handling complaints, legal compliance oversight, investigations, the imposition of administrative sanctions, and the application of criminal law, as well as supporting law enforcement operations in energy and mineral resources. b. Implementing policies concerning prevention, handling complaints, legal compliance oversight, investigations, the imposition of administrative sanctions, and the application of criminal law, along with supporting law enforcement operations in energy and mineral resources. c. Coordinating and synchronizing the implementation of policies related to prevention, handling complaints, legal compliance oversight, investigations, the imposition of administrative sanctions, and the application of criminal law, as well as supporting law enforcement operations in energy and mineral resources.
