By deriz@insightinnews.com The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) has unveiled that by September 2024, Indonesia welcomed over 10 million foreign visitors, drawing tantalizingly close to its ambitious annual target of 14 million. From January through September, the influx of international tourists surged by an impressive 20.28% year-on-year, culminating in a total of 10.37 million arrivals. Nevertheless, this figure still falls short of the pre-pandemic benchmarks. In the corresponding period of 2019, Indonesia had recorded upwards of 12 million international tourist arrivals. In September alone, as the preeminent economy in Southeast Asia, Indonesia greeted 1.28 million international tourists, reflecting a robust 19.53% increase from the previous year, despite a slight 4.5% dip from August. Countries such as Malaysia, Australia, China, and Singapore remain the foremost contributors to Indonesia's international visitor statistics. The average expenditure per international tourist was noted at US$1,375, approximately Rp21 million per visit, which, while substantial, is still below the previous month's average of US$1,443. In addition to the influx of international tourists, domestic tourism has also flourished, with a remarkable 757.96 million domestic trips recorded in the nine months leading up to September, showcasing a 21% increase compared to the same timeframe last year. Furthermore, the average hotel occupancy rate from January to September reached 51.33%, signaling a promising recovery in the tourism sector following the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic.
