By ferry@insightinnews.com The Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Bahlil Lahadalia, expresses unwavering confidence that the ambitious 40 percent biodiesel initiative, known as B40, will officially commence on January 1, 2025. This innovative fuel comprises a sophisticated blend of 40 percent crude palm oil (CPO) and 60 percent diesel, marking a significant advancement from the previous B35 program, which utilized 35 percent palm oil. "B40 will launch on January 1, and we are committed to evolving towards B100," Bahlil proclaimed following a press conference regarding the Quick Win Program proposal held at the opulent Four Seasons Hotel in Kuningan, South Jakarta, on Sunday, November 3, 2024. He elaborated on the forthcoming preparations for a fully sustainable biodiesel concept, B100, which will exclusively utilize palm oil. "This transition will be executed in phases, and we will keep you informed," he remarked. Bahlil further emphasized that the B40 program has undergone rigorous testing and is poised for implementation. "With divine grace, we will initiate this on January 1, 2025. It has been thoroughly tested and is ready for launch," he affirmed. In parallel, Agus Cahyono Adi, the Head of the Communication, Public Information Services, and Cooperation Bureau of the Ministry of ESDM, disclosed that the adoption of biodiesel has witnessed a remarkable increase in recent years. The recent surge in biodiesel production underscores the government's unwavering dedication to diminishing dependence on fossil fuels while bolstering energy security through the adoption of biodiesel. The blending ratios are set to ascend progressively, commencing with B35, advancing to B40, and ultimately achieving B50 and B60, as articulated by Agus in a press release from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources dated October 26, 2024. B50 signifies a fuel composition of 50 percent crude palm oil (CPO) and 50 percent diesel, while B60 denotes a blend of 60 percent CPO and 40 percent diesel. The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources reported that biodiesel production soared to 9.3 million kiloliters (KL) in 2021, escalating to 10.45 million KL in 2022. In 2023, production further climbed to 12.2 million KL, coinciding with the initiation of the B35 mandate in August. The economic advantages of biodiesel production in 2023 included a remarkable foreign exchange savings of Rp 120.54 trillion, an enhancement in the value of crude palm oil (CPO) to biodiesel amounting to Rp 15.82 trillion, and the generation of over 11,000 off-farm jobs alongside 1.5 million on-farm positions.
