, 03 Nov 2024

By srirahayu@insightinnews.com Minister of Home Affairs Tito Karnavian stated that the plan to revise several laws related to the political system using the Omnibus Law method will first be reported to President Prabowo Subianto before any further steps are taken. Tito made this statement during a press conference after a working meeting with Commission II of the Indonesian House of Representatives at the Parliament Complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on Thursday (October 31, 2024). "We at the Ministry of Home Affairs appreciate the initiative from our colleagues in the House to revise some laws related to the political system," Tito said. "However, from the government's side, especially the Ministry of Home Affairs, there are procedures that must be followed. I will report to the President first, and I usually hold inter-ministerial meetings on this matter," he added. Tito explained that they are currently assessing whether it is better to revise these political laws comprehensively through the Omnibus Law or to make limited revisions to each law. We will determine whether a comprehensive or limited revision is needed and which parts require adjustment. The results of the government's review will be presented to the DPR in the next meeting, Tito explained. Earlier, on Wednesday (30/10/2024), the Legislative Body (Baleg) of the DPR RI opened the opportunity to revise eight laws related to politics through the Omnibus Law. Ahmad Doli Kurnia, the Deputy Chair of Baleg DPR RI, stated that the implementation of the 2024 elections needs evaluation due to various challenges faced. "I suggest considering the creation of political laws using the Omnibus Law method, as everything is interconnected," Doli said in an official statement on Wednesday (30/10/2024). The eight laws projected for revision using the Omnibus Law method include the Election Law, Regional Election Law, Political Party Law, MD3 Law, Regional Government Law, DPRD Law, Village Government Law, and the Law on Central and Regional Financial Relations. Doli also mentioned a desire to merge the Election Law and Regional Election Law into a single legal framework.
