Profile Of Minister Of Religious Affairs Nasaruddin Umar

By srirahayu@insightinnews.com Prof. Dr. KH. Nasaruddin Umar, MA is a distinguished personality within Indonesian Islam, originating from South Sulawesi. He held the position of Deputy Minister of Religious Affairs for the Republic of Indonesia from 2011 to 2014. Born on June 23, 1959, in Ujung-Bone, he has played a vital role in advancing the Islamic scholarly community. His extensive body of work includes numerous academic publications that serve as invaluable contributions to the Islamic discourse in Indonesia. Among his notable writings is the book "Argumen Kesetaraan Jender Perspektif Al-Quran" (Paramadina, 1999), which explores gender bias in the Quran through research findings. In addition to his scholarly pursuits, he founded an interfaith organization aimed at promoting dialogue among different religious communities. He is also a member of the UK-Indonesia Advisory Team established by former British Prime Minister Tony Blair. His efforts and contributions have earned him numerous accolades. Nasaruddin Umar is widely recognized as the Grand Imam of Istiqlal Mosque in Jakarta. He held the position of Director General of the Directorate of Islamic Community Guidance at the Ministry of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia from 2006 to 2012, before serving as Deputy Minister from 2011 to 2014. As an influential figure, he has produced works that significantly contribute to the advancement of Islam in Indonesia. He received his early education in pesantren and graduated from IAIN Alauddin Ujung Pandang, earning his Bachelor's degree in 1980 and a commendable Bachelor's degree in 1984. He further pursued his Master's and Doctorate degrees at IAIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta. During his doctoral studies, he participated in a PhD program at McGill University in Montreal, Canada, from 1993 to 1994, and subsequently in a PhD program at Leiden University in the Netherlands from 1994 to 1995. In 1995, he also engaged in a Sandwich program at Paris University in France. Nasaruddin Umar was appointed as a Professor in the field of Tafsir at the Syarif Hidayatullah Faculty of Ushuluddin in 2002. He is currently listed as a lecturer at UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta and serves as the Rector of PTIQ University Jakarta.
