Indonesia is currently experiencing hot weather, with daily high temperatures reaching 38.4 degrees Celsius. Miming Saepudin, the head of the Special Weather Prediction and Early Warning Team at the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), reported that several regions are facing high temperatures on Monday, October 28, 2024. One of the affected areas is Larantuka in East Flores, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), which recorded a temperature of 38.4 degrees Celsius.

Other regions experiencing similar conditions include Majalengka in West Java, Semarang in Central Java, and Bima in West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), with temperatures ranging from 37 to 37.8 degrees Celsius. Additionally, the cities of Lampung, Bulungan in North Kalimantan, Sikka in East Nusa Tenggara, Sidoarjo in East Java, Pekanbaru in Riau, and Palembang in South Sumatra are also experiencing hot weather, with temperatures between 35.4 and 36.4 degrees Celsius. The question arises: what is causing this heatwave in Indonesia at the end of October 2024?

Miming explained that the hot weather in Indonesia at the end of October 2024 is attributed to a lack of cloud cover, allowing sunlight to directly reach the Earth's surface. Furthermore, this heat condition is influenced by the apparent movement of the sun being positioned directly over the equator. Nevertheless, observations from BMKG indicate that the hot weather currently affecting Indonesia is considered normal. Miming added that this situation does not impact the seasonal changes in Indonesia.

Miming urges the community to regularly consume plain water to prevent dehydration, particularly during hot weather in Indonesia, especially when engaging in outdoor activities. An alternative measure to cope with high temperatures is to wear hats or use umbrellas to shield the head and upper body from sunlight. The public is also reminded to wear sunglasses and, if necessary, apply sunscreen to protect the skin from ultraviolet (UV) rays.

On another note, Miming cautions against burning in vacant lots, forests, or waste disposal sites as a preventive measure against fires. The community is encouraged to monitor current weather conditions through the online application infoBMKG, social media channels of infoBMKG, or by contacting the nearest BMKG office.

Meanwhile, BMKG forecasts that the La Nina phenomenon will persist until early 2025. Ardhasena Sopaheluwakan, the Deputy for Climatology at BMKG, noted that while signs of this phenomenon are present, confirmation regarding La Nina has yet to be established.
