General Police Drs. H.M. Tito Karnavian, M.A., Ph.D., was born in Palembang on October 26, 1964, to parents Muhammad Saleh and Supriatini. His father was a journalist for Radio Republik Indonesia (RRI). Tito is the second of six siblings. He is married to Tri Suswati and they have three children.

Tito serves as an officer in the Indonesian National Police and was part of the team that successfully dismantled the terrorist network led by Noordin Moch. Top. He was promoted from Kombes Pol. H.M. Tito Karnavian to Brigadier General and appointed as the head of Densus 88 Anti-Terror at the National Police Headquarters. On March 14, 2016, through a confidential Telegram from the Chief of Police, Tito Karnavian was appointed as the Head of the National Counter-Terrorism Agency (BNPT), succeeding Komjen. Pol. Saud Usman Nasution, who had retired.

Tito Karnavian completed his secondary education at SMA Negeri 2 Palembang before entering the Indonesian Military Academy (AKABRI) in 1978, where he received the Adhi Makayasa award for being the top graduate of the police academy. He earned his Master’s degree in Police Studies from the University of Exeter in the United Kingdom in 1993, completed his studies at the Police Science College in Jakarta in 1996, and obtained a bachelor's degree in Police Studies.

Additionally, Tito Karnavian pursued further education at Massey University in Auckland, New Zealand, in 1998, specializing in Strategic Studies, and attended the Rajaratnam School of International Studies at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore in 2008 as a PhD candidate in Strategic Studies. He completed his PhD with excellent results in March 2013.

As one of the leaders of Densus 88 Anti-Terror, Tito has handled several high-profile cases, including the armed robbery operation at CIMB Bank Medan in 2010, the suicide bombing investigation at the Cirebon City Police, and the bombings at the Ritz Carlton and JW Marriott hotels in 2009, among other terrorism-related cases.

Tito's career in the police force advanced rapidly due to his notable achievements, particularly highlighted by the arrest of Hutomo Mandala, also known as Tommy Soeharto, the son of former President Soeharto. During this operation, Tito, alongside the Cobra team, successfully apprehended Tommy Soeharto, which significantly contributed to his remarkable promotion within the police ranks.

On June 15, 2016, President Joko Widodo exercised his prerogative by proposing the name of Police Commissioner General Tito Karnavian as the sole candidate for the position of Chief of Police to the House of Representatives, succeeding General Badrodin Haiti. The President submitted his proposal to the House through the state secretary.

General Drs. H.M. Tito Karnavian, M.A., Ph.D., was officially inaugurated as the Head of the Indonesian National Police on Wednesday, July 13, 2016. His rank was immediately elevated by one level to General of Police. The inauguration ceremony took place at the State Palace at 2:00 PM WIB.

On October 23, 2019, President Joko Widodo appointed Tito Karnavian as the Minister of Home Affairs in the Advanced Indonesia Cabinet for the 2019-2024 term.
