Muhaimin Iskandar, commonly known as Gus Imin or Cak Imin, was born in Jombang, East Java, on September 24, 1966. His father, Muhammad Iskandar, served as a teacher at the ManbaulMa'arif Islamic boarding school in Jombang.

Cak Imin completed his education at the State Tsanawiyah Madrasah in Jombang and the State Aliyah Madrasah I in Yogyakarta. After graduating from Aliyah in 1985, Muhaimin pursued his undergraduate studies at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences at Gadjah Mada University, completing his degree at the age of 26. He later obtained a master's degree in communication from the University of Indonesia (UI) ten years later, graduating in 2001.

During his university years, Muhaimin was actively involved in discussion forums and student movements. He joined the Indonesian Islamic Student Movement (PMII) and was elected as the branch chairman of PMII Yogyakarta from 1994 to 1997. Additionally, he was active in the National Youth Committee of Indonesia (KNPI).

Muhaimin's political career coincided with the onset of the Reform Era. In 1998, he, along with prominent figures from Nahdlatul Ulama, including Abdurrahman Wahid, founded the National Awakening Party (PKB), where he was appointed as the Secretary-General.

In the 1999 elections, Muhaimin was elected as a member of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) representing PKB. At the age of 33, he became the Deputy Speaker of the DPR from 1999 to 2004, making him one of the youngest leaders in the history of the institution.

His career continued to ascend as he became the chairman of PKB. In the 2004 elections, Muhaimin was re-elected to the DPR and served again as Deputy Speaker from 2004 to 2009. In the subsequent elections, he successfully secured a seat in the DPR for the third time and was appointed by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono as the Minister of Manpower and Transmigration, serving from 2009 to 2014.

At the conclusion of his ministerial term in 2014, Muhaimin was re-elected as the chairman of the PKB by acclamation. He is credited with successfully increasing the electoral support for the PKB in the 2014 elections. His achievements continued as he facilitated the appointment of PKB members as ministers in Joko Widodo's Working Cabinet from 2014 to 2019.

Cak Imin's formative years were significantly influenced by his close relationship with a notable figure in Indonesian politics, former president Abdurrahman “Gus Dur” Wahid, who was also his uncle. He fondly recalls Gus Dur as both a teacher and mentor, sharing enjoyable moments playing soccer together. However, their bond deteriorated when Cak Imin and Gus Dur competed for the leadership of the PKB.

Muhaimin Iskandar, commonly known as Cak Imin, has gained considerable attention following his nomination as the vice-presidential candidate alongside AniesBaswedan for the 2024 Presidential Election.
