Gerindra Secretary General Ahmad Muzani Inaugurated As MPR Speaker

The People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) on Thursday (3/10/2024) held a plenary session to appoint and inaugurate its leadership for the 2024-2029 term. The inauguration ceremony for the new MPR leadership was conducted at the Nusantara Building, situated within the Senayan Parliamentary Complex in Jakarta.

Prior to the inauguration of MPR leadership, 732 members of the MPR for the 2024-2029 term had been officially sworn in. This oath-taking ceremony took place during a plenary meeting at the MPR/DPR Building, also located within the Senayan Parliamentary Complex, on Tuesday, October 1, 2024. The newly sworn-in members of the MPR include 580 representatives from the House of Representatives (DPR) and 152 representatives from the Regional Representative Council (DPD).

The People's Consultative Assembly consists of representatives from both the House of Representatives and the Regional Representative Council, with all members elected via general elections. The MPR possesses the following authorities:

a. Amending and establishing the Constitution of the Republic of Indonesia of 1945;  

b. Appointing the President and/or Vice President resulting from the general election;  

c. Deciding on the proposal from the House of Representatives to dismiss the President and/or Vice President during their term, following a ruling from the Constitutional Court that the President and/or Vice President has been proven to commit legal violations such as treason against the state, corruption, bribery, other serious crimes, or disgraceful acts, and/or that the President and/or Vice President no longer meets the qualifications required for their position;  

d. Appointing the Vice President as President in the event that the President passes away, resigns, is dismissed, or is unable to fulfill their duties during their term;  

e. Selecting a Vice President from two candidates proposed by the President in the case of a vacancy in the Vice Presidency during their term; and  

f. Electing a President and Vice President if both are unable to fulfill their duties, resign, are dismissed, or pass away simultaneously, from two pairs of presidential and vice-presidential candidates proposed by political parties or coalitions of political parties whose candidates received the highest and second-highest votes in the previous general election, until the end of their term.
