Prabowo Agrees To Lift The Moratorium On Sending Indonesian Workers To Saudi Arabia

Wednesday, 19 Mar 2025

The Indonesian Minister of Migrant Worker Protection (P2MI), Abdul Kadir Karding, announced that President Prabowo Subianto has agreed to lift the moratorium on sending Indonesian Migrant Workers (PMI) to Saudi Arabia. This decision will soon be formalized in a cooperation agreement between the two countries.

Karding made this statement after reporting to President Prabowo at the State Palace on Friday, March 14, 2025. He mentioned that discussions have already taken place with the Saudi Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development to revisit the moratorium's reopening. "We reported this to the president, and he was very supportive," he said during a press briefing. The president even requested a faster process and the creation of a training scheme.

Karding explained that the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) regarding the cooperation for sending PMIs will be signed soon in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. If the MoU is signed in March, Karding believes that Indonesia could begin its first deployment by June.

"So, if the MoU is signed this March, we both agree that by June we should start the first deployment," Karding stated.

According to Karding, the Saudi government has promised around 600,000 job opportunities, which include 400,000 domestic or household workers and 200,000 to 250,000 formal workers.

It is important to note that the moratorium on sending PMIs to Saudi Arabia has been in place since 2015. Unfortunately, Karding, a former member of the Indonesian Parliament, pointed out that at least 25,000 Indonesians work illegally in Saudi Arabia each year.
