Hong Kong is enhancing its status as a Muslim-friendly travel destination by improving various facilities and services tailored to the needs of Muslim tourists. With an increasing number of hotels certified by Crescent Rating (CR) and more halal-certified restaurants, Muslim travelers can now enjoy a more comfortable and enjoyable experience in Hong Kong. For context, Crescent Rating is a research organization based in Singapore that focuses on halal travel. One of the main initiatives by the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) is to encourage more hotels to participate in the Crescent Rating accreditation program. As of February 2025, 52 hotels in Hong Kong have received ratings from Crescent Rating based on their Muslim-friendly amenities.
Since the launch of the Muslim-friendly initiative by HKTB in June 2024, the number of halal-certified restaurants accredited by the Incorporated Trustees of the Islamic Community Fund of Hong Kong has risen from 100 to 153. This increase provides more halal dining options for Muslim visitors to Hong Kong. The impact of Muslim-friendly tourism on Hong Kong's tourism sector has been significant, attracting more Muslim travelers, particularly from Indonesia and Malaysia. Data indicates a notable rise in visitors from Indonesia by 43 percent and from Malaysia by 50 percent annually.
These figures reflect a growing interest among the Muslim community in visiting Hong Kong. In response to this trend, more local businesses are adopting Muslim-friendly facilities to attract a larger share of the global Muslim market. This is expected to further solidify Hong Kong's position as a leading destination for Muslim tourists in Asia.
HKTB is working to enhance Muslim-friendly services by collaborating with stakeholders in the tourism industry to better understand the needs of Muslim travelers. Ongoing training and guidance programs are being implemented to improve service quality across various tourism sectors.
