The Ministry of Communication and Digital (Komdigi) has removed 6,349,606 illegal or negative content as of January 21, 2025. "As of January 21, the number of illegal content taken down by Komdigi is 6,349,606," stated Minister Meutya Hafid during a working meeting with Commission I of the Indonesian House of Representatives in Senayan, Central Jakarta, on Tuesday, February 4, 2025. However, Meutya noted that simply removing illegal content does not solve the issue of negative content. She explained that a technological approach alone cannot break the cycle of online gambling, pornography, and other negative content.
To address this, her ministry has issued regulations requiring Electronic System Providers (PSE) to also remove such content. Failure to comply will result in penalties. "That's why we have established regulations regarding collaboration, as some takedowns must be carried out by the PSE," Meutya said. She revealed that this policy was implemented after receiving numerous complaints from the public about encountering negative content on social media platforms like Facebook and X.
"We apologize, for instance, on Meta, YouTube, X, and Telegram; these platforms must also be willing to take down content. This is why we have introduced a system that can impose fines if they refuse to comply," she explained. According to her, persuasive invitations to non-compliant PSEs have proven ineffective, as they tend to comply only temporarily until negative content resurfaces. "Mr. Deputy Minister (Angga Raka) is already familiar with this; if they are a bit more orderly, there will be more issues, and we will have to call them again," Meutya added.
