Mendikdasmen: AI And Coding Will Be Elective Subjects Starting Next Semester

Wednesday, 12 Feb 2025

Coding and artificial intelligence (AI) education will soon be offered as elective subjects. The Minister of Basic and Secondary Education, Abdul Mu'ti, announced that coding and AI will be part of the curriculum starting next semester. "From next semester, these will be elective subjects in schools," Mu'ti stated in Jakarta on Sunday, February 2, 2025. He mentioned that this plan has received support from the Minister of Communication and Digital, Meutya Viada Hafid.

Many students will be able to master technology, and Mu'ti hopes that Indonesian children will not only learn technology but also use it positively. "We can continue to collaborate to build a generation that not only understands technology but also applies it for beneficial purposes that contribute to the nation's education," he explained. Meanwhile, Meutya Viada Hafid stated that her ministry is involved in developing the curriculum for coding in primary and secondary schools. She noted that they have frequently provided digital literacy, which can be integrated into the curriculum. "Certainly, in creating this curriculum, we will collaborate with the Ministry of Education. We have already conducted a lot of digital literacy, so the curriculum we use for these literacies can be applied when coding is implemented in regular education," Meutya elaborated, as reported by Antara on Friday, December 13, 2024. In addition to participating in the coding curriculum development, Meutya mentioned that there will be several collaborative opportunities between the Ministry of Communication and Digital and the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education to ensure the successful introduction of coding in primary and secondary education. "We will discuss further with the Minister of Education about how our collaboration will take shape."

"Is it only during the curriculum development, or can our digital literacy team also visit schools to train the teachers first?" she said. One approach is to provide digital literacy training specifically focused on coding for teachers at schools. This way, teachers can gain a deeper understanding before teaching their students, a method known as Training of Trainer (ToT). "This will enable teachers to independently introduce digital literacy. I believe we will discuss this further with the Minister of Education," Meutya concluded.
