Webometrics, a leading global university ranking organization, officially released its list of the best universities in Indonesia on Monday, January 27, 2025. This independent and objective ranking body provides free and open information about university performance worldwide. According to their official website, the ranking evaluates nearly 31,000 higher education institutions globally, using various assessment indicators. Below is the list of the top 10 public universities (PTN) and the top 10 private universities (PTS) in Indonesia as of January 2025.

In 2025, Webometrics assessed over 31,000 universities worldwide between January 1 and 20. The evaluation system includes three main indicators: the visibility or impact of the institution's official website content, the transparency of the most cited researchers, and the excellence of the most cited papers. As a result, Harvard University was ranked as the best university in the world by Webometrics in 2025, followed by Stanford University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the University of Oxford, and the University of California Berkeley.

For Indonesia, Universitas Indonesia (UI) was recognized as the top public university in 2025, ranking 503rd among over 31,000 universities globally. Here is the list of the best public universities in Indonesia for 2025 according to Webometrics:

1. Universitas Indonesia (UI): 503rd in the world

2. Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM): 666th in the world

3. Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB): 852nd in the world

4. Universitas Diponegoro (Undip): 995th in the world

5. IPB University: 999th in the world

6. Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta: 1,055th in the world

7. Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) Surabaya: 1,114th in the world

8. Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (UPI): 1,208th in the world

9. Universitas Negeri Malang (UM): 1,294th in the world

10. Universitas Andalas (Unand) in Padang is ranked 1,416 in the world.

Additionally, several other Indonesian universities are included in the Webometrics ranking, although they did not make it to the top 10. These include Universitas Airlangga (1,419), Universitas Sumatera Utara (1,488), Universitas Lampung (1,588), Universitas Sriwijaya (1,592), and Universitas Brawijaya (1,800). Other notable mentions are Universitas Padjadjaran (1,830), Universitas Jember (1,847), Universitas Jenderal Soedirman (1,905), Universitas Negeri Surabaya (2,219), and Universitas Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa (2,266).
