RPP KEN Approved, Renewable Energy Target To Reach 70 Percent By 2040

, 09 Feb 2025

The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) plans to increase the use of Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation (EBTKE) to 70 percent. This goal aligns with the draft government regulation on the National Energy Policy (KEN), which has been approved by Commission XII of the Indonesian House of Representatives. Minister Bahlil Lahadalia stated that this plan considers EBTKE in the context of achieving net-zero emissions by 2060, with a target of using at least 60-70 percent EBTKE from 2025 to 2040. He emphasized that this initiative aims to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and position Indonesia as a leader in green energy development.

The KEN draft is a result of aligning policies and programs from the Red and White Cabinet for the 2025-2029 period, accommodating an economic growth target of 8 percent by 2029. Bahlil noted that a key focus in developing the KEN draft is to ensure alignment between the National Electricity General Plan (RUKN) and the Electricity Supply Business Plan (RUPTL). "We have collaborated for about two weeks to ensure that per capita electricity needs reflect an 8 percent growth," Bahlil said. "The President approved this through a signed letter on September 17." He explained that the changes are based on studies from the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas), the National Energy Council (DEN), and INDEF, which indicate that an 8 percent economic growth can be achieved with contributions from various sectors, including manufacturing, agriculture, construction, digital economy, tourism, transportation, food and beverage industry, and financial services. The government assures that the implementation of the KEN draft will not only focus on energy targets but also consider its impact on the community.
