Friday, 31 Jan 2025

The East Java Regional Office of the Ministry of Law inaugurated an Intellectual Property Clinic at Tebuireng Islamic Boarding School in Jombang, East Java, on Tuesday (January 21, 2025). This clinic marks the government's initial step to protect the works created within the pesantren and by its community. According to Kompas.com, the opening ceremony began with a partnership agreement signed between Tebuireng Islamic Boarding School and the East Java Ministry of Law Office. The agreement was signed by Haris Sukamto, the Head of the East Java Ministry of Law Office, and KH Abdul Hakim Mahfudz, also known as Gus Kikin, the caretaker of Tebuireng. After the signing, Gus Kikin and the Director General of Intellectual Property at the Ministry of Law, Ir. Razilu, cut the ribbon to officially open the clinic. Razilu stated that pesantren have long been centers of knowledge, producing many intellectual works. However, he noted that not many of these works are protected as intellectual property because they have not been registered. For instance, he mentioned the patent or trademark of Tebuireng Islamic Boarding School, which, despite being established 125 years ago, only recently received recognition as intellectual property after registration. "The name is Tebuireng Islamic Boarding School. Although it has existed for 125 years, it was not registered until now. Thankfully, it has been registered, and it holds significant value," Razilu said at the pesantren on Tuesday evening. He emphasized the importance of registering various intellectual works from the pesantren to ensure they receive protection. Razilu pointed out that there are actually many intellectual works produced in the pesantren.
