Prabowo Asks Bahlil To Aim For An Oil Production Target Of One Million Barrels Per Day By 2028

Saturday, 25 Jan 2025

Energy Minister Bahlil Lahadalia stated that he received instructions to raise the oil lifting target to one million barrels per day by 2028-2029. With this target, Bahlil mentioned that Indonesia would no longer need to import oil.

"We aim for, as directed by the President, to reach a lifting of one million barrels per day by 2028-2029 so that we can stop oil imports by 2029," Bahlil said at the MKGR anniversary event in Jakarta on Saturday (January 18, 2025). He noted that this target was set by President Prabowo Subianto before he attended the MKGR anniversary event. The Golkar Party chairman praised Prabowo for holding a meeting on the weekend.

"I just finished a meeting with President Prabowo in Hambalang. It's Sunday, and it's truly remarkable that our President called us to discuss lifting," Bahlil explained. He pointed out that the oil lifting has been declining over the past two months. "Currently, our lifting has decreased from 600,000 to 590,000 barrels per day," he said. Bahlil also revealed that current oil consumption is about 1.6 million barrels per day.

Therefore, Prabowo aims to increase oil lifting in Indonesia. "By allocating around Rp 500 trillion that could be lost each year on oil purchases, this is also one reason why our currency has weakened against the dollar," Bahlil added.
