PDI Perjuangan has stated that its political stance with President Prabowo Subianto's government is not one of opposition. DPP PDI Perjuangan Chairman Ahmad Basarah mentioned that this position was established a few days before Prabowo was inaugurated as the 8th President of Indonesia on October 20.
Basarah was tasked by PDI Perjuangan's Chairperson Megawati Soekarnoputri to convey a message to Prabowo through Gerindra's Secretary General, Ahmad Muzani. One key message from Megawati was that PDI Perjuangan does not follow a presidential government system.
"We do not recognize the term opposition, nor do we operate as an opposition," Basarah said after the 52nd anniversary event of PDI Perjuangan in Jakarta on January 10, 2025.
For Megawati, the essence of the Pancasila state philosophy is mutual cooperation. Therefore, PDI Perjuangan will uphold this principle during Prabowo's administration. Basarah emphasized that this means they will collaborate with Prabowo's government, even if they do not place any PDI Perjuangan members in the Red and White Cabinet.
For the past ten years, PDI Perjuangan has been the winning party in presidential elections, successfully supporting Joko Widodo in the 2014 and 2019 elections. From 2004 to 2014, during the presidencies of Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY), PDI Perjuangan was not part of the government.
Basarah noted that PDI Perjuangan's position in Prabowo's government differs from its stance during SBY's presidency, as Megawati and Prabowo share a long-standing friendship. He did not elaborate on the relationship between Megawati and SBY during the 2004-2014 period or currently, but it is known that their relationship has been cold, especially after SBY decided to run for president for the first time in 2004.
SBY was part of Megawati's team as he served as the Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs. Basarah explained that the political stance of PDI Perjuangan, which supports Prabowo's government, is different from its position when it was outside SBY's administration from 2004 to 2014. Aditya Perdana, the Director of Algoritma Research and Consulting, noted that PDI Perjuangan is one of the few political parties in Indonesia that has survived since the New Order era. However, the political direction of PDI Perjuangan under Megawati differs from that of Golkar, another long-standing party. For instance, when PDI Perjuangan lost in the presidential election, it was reluctant to join the government. In contrast, Golkar maintains a principle of staying in government, even if their candidate loses. Aditya emphasized that Golkar is clear about its goal to be part of the government, while PDI Perjuangan only seeks power if it wins.
