UI Achieves First Place In Asia In The UI GreenMetric World University Rankings 2024

Wednesday, 25 Dec 2024

Universitas Indonesia (UI) has achieved the top spot in the list of the most sustainable universities in Asia for 2024, according to the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings 2024. UI's ranking improved from 24th to 21st in this year's assessment. Prof. Riri Fitri Sari, head of UI GreenMetric, stated that UI has enhanced its global position while remaining the best in Asia, despite an increase in participants from 1,183 to 1,477 universities. "This year's figures mark an important milestone for UI GreenMetric. They highlight not only the enthusiasm of participating institutions but also our strong vision for a sustainable future," said Prof. Riri in a written statement on Monday (December 23, 2024). Riri noted that every institution involved is a champion, reflecting their commitment to creating eco-friendly campuses. UI was recognized as "The 21st Most Sustainable University" after being evaluated on six criteria set by UI GreenMetric, including setting and infrastructure, energy and climate change, waste, water, transportation, and education and research. UI scored a total of 9,050 points, with the highest scores in Waste and Education and Research, each earning 1,800 points based on key indicators.

In the Waste category, the indicators include campus recycling programs, organic waste processing, initiatives to reduce paper and plastic use, inorganic waste management, and handling of hazardous waste. UI excelled in waste management on campus, both for recyclable and organic waste. This success is attributed to its waste management policy, which requires each faculty to establish its own Waste Processing Facility. Waste sorting is conducted by separating electronic waste, which falls under hazardous and toxic categories.

UI has set up a processing unit for organic waste that turns food scraps and dry and wet leaves into compost. Additionally, each faculty must provide drinking fountains or ready-to-drink water to cut down on single-use plastic bottles. Thanks to these efforts, UI has outperformed RUDN University, National Pingtung University of Science and Technology, Universiti Putra Malaysia, and University of Pécs, which ranked 22nd to 25th in the world.
