BNPT Has Found 180,954 Radicalism-related Posts On Social Media Linked To ISIS, JAD, HTI, And JAT

Thursday, 26 Dec 2024

The National Counter-Terrorism Agency (BNPT) found 180,954 pieces of content related to radicalism, intolerance, and extremism in 2024. These contents are linked to various terrorist networks, including the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), Jamaah Asharut Daulah (JAD), Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia (HTI), and Jamaah Asharut Tauhid (JAT).

BNPT Chief Commissioner Eddy Hartono stated that most of the content is dominated by propaganda from these terrorist groups. "It is mainly propaganda from networks affiliated with ISIS, HTI, JAT, and JAD," he said at a press conference held at Hotel Aryaduta in Central Jakarta on Monday, December 23, 2024. To combat the spread of radical content, BNPT is collaborating with the Ministry of Communication and Digital RI to block access and remove this content.

In terms of platforms, Instagram had the highest number of posts with 86,203, followed by Facebook with 45,449, and TikTok with 23,595. Other platforms included X/Twitter with 9,535 posts, WhatsApp with 8,506, Telegram with 4,751, and online media with 3 posts.

Eddy Hartono pointed out that Telegram is widely used by extremist and terrorist groups to spread propaganda, as it allows for unlimited group membership. "We have coordinated with Digital Communication, including Telegram, in the context of punishing offenders; we can access Telegram," he stated.

Monitoring content on these platforms is crucial because Law Number 5 of 2018 states that planning harmful acts can be punishable. Additionally, BNPT is mapping areas prone to radicalism and terrorism. "However, due to its confidential nature, we cannot disclose it yet. This is for our own use to take preventive measures," he concluded.
