The government aims to achieve self-sufficiency in food and energy through social forestry initiatives. Minister of Forestry Raja Juli Antoni stated that this effort follows a meeting held with President Prabowo Subianto and several ministries.
"After receiving a briefing from the President regarding food and energy self-sufficiency, my team and I have begun to assess which areas have the potential for achieving this goal," Raja Juli mentioned in a written statement on Friday, December 13, 2024.
He highlighted the potential of utilizing reserve forests for energy production, specifically through the use of sugar palm, which can yield bioethanol.
Raja Juli pointed out that the benefits of sugar palm extend beyond food production, reaching into the energy sector as well. The sap from the sugar palm can be fermented to produce bioethanol, a renewable energy source.
"Our team has spent the last two weeks identifying suitable areas within social forestry for food crop cultivation," Raja Juli explained.
It is important to note that bioethanol is a type of renewable fuel derived from biomass sources, including starch, sugar, and cellulose.
The development of bioethanol is also part of the work program of Prabowo-Gibran under the Asta Cita 2 initiative, which focuses on green economy points. This document outlines plans to develop bioethanol from cassava and sugarcane, while also aiming for self-sufficiency in sugar commodities. (deriz@insightinnews.com)
