Djoko Siswanto, the Secretary General of the National Energy Council (DEN), shared the latest developments regarding the Indonesian government's plans to construct nuclear power plants (NPP). He indicated that all involved parties are currently conducting studies and assessments related to nuclear energy regulations.
According to him, the regulations concerning nuclear energy will be incorporated into the National Energy Policy Draft Regulation (RPP KEN) and the Draft Law on New and Renewable Energy (RUU EBET), which are presently under discussion in the House of Representatives and are expected to be released soon.
"The RPP KEN has set a target for 2032. At this point, all stakeholders preparing for nuclear development are actively working, particularly on the various studies involved. The initial target is set at 250 megawatts, which has the potential to double," he stated during an event at JCC Senayan, Jakarta, on Tuesday, December 10, 2024.
Djoko also mentioned that his team has received information on safe locations for establishing nuclear power plants from BRIN. "Several site study locations, including Bangka Belitung and Kalimantan, as well as other areas, have already been reported to DEN by BRIN," he added.
Previously, under President Prabowo Subianto's administration, there was a declaration to enhance electricity capacity or electrification by 100 gigawatts (GW) over the next 15 years, with a small portion of this target to be met through nuclear energy.
This was directly stated by Hashim S. Djojohadikusumo, Indonesia's Delegation Leader at COP 29. In his speech at COP 29, Hashim revealed Indonesia's intention to add 100 GW of electricity, with approximately 75% of that being sourced from clean energy. Of the total 75% clean energy target, about 5.3 GW is planned to come from nuclear power.
He emphasized that while nuclear energy may not be considered sustainable by all, it is undoubtedly clean. "In addition to the 5.3 GW coming from nuclear energy, which may not be seen as sustainable, it is recognized as clean energy. Furthermore, there will also be contributions from gas power," Hashim explained after delivering Indonesia's National Message at COP 29 held at the Baku Olympic Stadium in Azerbaijan.
