The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued an early warning regarding extreme weather conditions. These conditions are expected to persist until April 2025. The early warning indicates a projected increase in rainfall by 20 percent. It is anticipated that this phenomenon will affect several regions during the Christmas 2024 and New Year 2025 periods. The extreme weather may continue until March or April 2025.
"Extreme weather is expected to potentially occur until March-April 2025, influenced by a weak La NiƱa phenomenon that could lead to a 20 percent increase in rainfall," stated BMKG Head Dwikorita Karnawati on Sunday, December 8, 2024.
She noted that atmospheric dynamics, such as the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) and the potential cold surge moving from Asia (Siberia) towards western Indonesia, are also projected to be active during the holiday season.
"Both phenomena have the potential to enhance the intensity and volume of rainfall across various regions in Indonesia, although the scale and impact still require further monitoring," she added.
According to a survey conducted by the Ministry of Transportation, it is predicted that approximately 110.67 million people will travel during the 2024/2025 holiday season.
"The majority of these travelers are expected to use private vehicles, such as cars and motorcycles, making them particularly vulnerable to extreme weather conditions during their journeys," she concluded.
BMKG is diligently monitoring the current conditions and providing up-to-date information to support proactive measures and mitigate risks in the field.
It has been stated that weather alerts will be issued weekly and reiterated three days prior to an event, extending even to three hours before the occurrence of extreme weather.
The BMKG mobile application also features a Digital Weather for Traffic (DWT) service. This service can be utilized by travelers to check weather information along their travel routes.
"Users can access early warning information, land route weather, travel route weather, airport weather, port weather, crossing weather, as well as flight and wave information," he noted. (deriz@insightinnews.com)
