President Prabowo Subianto met with the National Economic Council (DEN) at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Thursday, December 5, 2024. The meeting addressed various strategic economic issues, ranging from public purchasing power to concrete measures aimed at enhancing investment competitiveness and improving the efficiency of state spending.

Muhammad Chatib Basri, a member of the National Economic Council, emphasized the concern regarding the purchasing power of the middle class. He also highlighted the significance of balancing policies related to the provincial minimum wage (UMP).

"This is related to purchasing power on one hand, but also to the competitiveness of industries on the other," he stated.

Meanwhile, Mari Elka Pangestu, the Vice Chair of DEN, explained that the discussions also included strategic steps to sustain economic growth in the short and medium term. Mari underscored the importance of attracting quality investments that can strengthen the national manufacturing sector.

"We aim to attract types of investments that will also bring their supply chains, thus deepening the manufacturing sector and addressing the structural issues within it," Mari remarked.

Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, the Chairman of the National Economic Council (DEN), further stated that several concrete measures will be implemented promptly, including the launch of version 6 of the e-catalog, which is scheduled for next month. According to Luhut, this catalog will encompass 95 percent of the state budget expenditures, which is anticipated to significantly reduce inefficiencies that have reached considerable levels.

Luhut expressed confidence that through the digitalization of government processes, the national economic growth target of 8 percent can be gradually achieved over the next five years.

He remarked, "Thus, the aforementioned combinations, along with the digitalization of all data within government ministries and institutions, will be executed soon, ultimately leading to advancements in government technology."

This meeting underscores President Prabowo's commitment to strengthening the national economic foundation through collaboration between the government and the National Economic Council. The strategic and concrete measures are expected to effectively address both short-term and long-term economic challenges. (srirahayu@insightinnews.com)
