President Prabowo Subianto welcomed a delegation from the Japan-Indonesia Association (JAPINDA) at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Thursday, December 5, 2024. The meeting focused on various collaborative initiatives, including investment, irrigation, land management, and strategic energy projects.
"The President first expressed his appreciation for the large Japanese companies that have been operating in Indonesia for a considerable time. They also provided updates on several ongoing investments and future plans," stated the Minister of Investment and Downstream Industry, Rosan Roeslani.
Rosan further elaborated that a key topic of discussion was the continuation of the Masela Block project, which has been in planning since 2000. JAPINDA expressed hopes that the project could commence next year and be completed in the following years.
President Prabowo also encouraged Japanese companies to participate in the Great Giant Sea Wall project, a significant initiative aimed at protecting Jakarta from flooding, extending up to 600 kilometers. "We hope for the involvement of Japanese construction firms in this endeavor," Rosan remarked.
In addition to economic matters, discussions also encompassed education and health. President Prabowo proposed the establishment of Japanese schools and universities in Indonesia as part of human resource development.
"The President also invited the opening of Japanese schools and universities in Indonesia, as we are aware that several universities from the United States and the United Kingdom are set to establish campuses here next year. We hope that Japan will also participate, and the response has been positive," Rosan concluded.
Present at the meeting were Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto, Minister of Foreign Affairs Sugiono, Minister of Investment and Downstream Industry Rosan Roeslani, Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya, and Deputy Minister of Finance Suahasil Nazara.
Business representatives from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) sought the support of President Prabowo Subianto for several projects in Japan related to Indonesia. This request for support was one of the topics discussed during a meeting between the business delegation, part of the Japan Indonesia Association (Japinda), and President Prabowo at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Thursday, December 5, 2024.
Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto revealed that there are indeed several projects in Indonesia facilitated by JICA, including the development of the MRT project for both the east and west phases. "JICA has several other projects as well, including the development of the MRT railway for the east-west phase, along with other projects that require the president's support," stated Airlangga at the Presidential Palace Complex on Thursday.
In addition to the MRT, other facilitated projects include the development of Patimban Port, irrigation projects, and agricultural initiatives. "This also encompasses the construction of several fishing ports and the development of fish auction markets," Airlangga added.
The second topic discussed during the meeting was Sumitomo Forestry, which has been involved in managing peatland, primarily focusing on the reforestation of peat areas in West Kalimantan. Subsequently, this business entity was assigned an additional task to manage former rice estates in Central Kalimantan. "With the land currently being prepared, a prototype will be developed to restore its forest functions. Once this pilot plan is implemented, they will proceed to cultivate food crops," stated Airlangga.
The third topic addressed was the perpetual gas project in the Masela Block, being developed by Inpex Masela Ltd. This project requires an investment of approximately 21 billion US dollars, with the current phase involving the completion of the front-end engineering design. (srirahayu@insightinnews.com)
