Thursday, 05 Dec 2024

Heri Hermansyah has officially assumed the position of Rector of the University of Indonesia (UI) for the 2024-2029 term, succeeding Ari Kuncoro following his inauguration by the Chairman of the Board of Trustees (MWA), Cholil Staquf.

The inauguration ceremony and handover of the rector's position for the 2024-2029 term took place at the Purnomo FISIP UI Hall in Depok on Wednesday, December 4, 2024.

In his address, Prof. Heri Hermansyah, the newly appointed Rector of UI, highlighted the university's current global ranking of 206. He attributed this achievement, in part, to the efforts of the previous rector, Prof. Ari Kuncoro, who successfully positioned UI at 206 in the QS Rankings and as one of the top universities in Indonesia according to various institutions. "Thanks to his leadership, UI has achieved remarkable global recognition, including the QS Ranking of 206," stated Prof. Heri during his speech after taking the oath of office at the Purnomo Prawiro Multipurpose Hall in Depok, West Java, on Wednesday.

Prof. Heri emphasized that UI is currently navigating a rapidly changing global landscape, characterized by the fourth industrial revolution, society 5.0, technological distribution, and the new normal era. He also mentioned the challenges posed by Generation Z, as well as geopolitical and geo-economic factors, which require UI to be both adaptive and innovative. "UI must be capable of competing with the world's leading universities in producing impactful research and innovations, as well as in cultivating graduates with global competitiveness," he remarked.

Furthermore, Professor Heri stated that the University of Indonesia (UI) is also expected to embody an entrepreneurial spirit, enabling it to address the funding needs necessary for delivering high-quality outputs in accordance with the Tri Dharma of Higher Education and enhancing the welfare of its community. He emphasized that UI bears a significant responsibility as a center of intellectual excellence in fostering the nation's education. "We must demonstrate that the University of Indonesia is a world-class research university with an entrepreneurial spirit and a high impact on the development of the nation and state," he remarked.

Professor Heri interprets UI as an acronym for "Unggul Impactfull" and also as "Untuk Indonesia." He believes that these two acronyms will serve as the guiding principles for UI in its mission to advance one of the best campuses in Indonesia. "These meaningful acronyms will underpin every step we take," Professor Heri stated. (deriz@insightinnews.com)
