Indonesia has imported 600 sheep and dairy goats from Australia. These animals arrived at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Tangerang on Wednesday, December 4, 2024. The Director General of Livestock and Animal Health (Dirjen PKH) at the Ministry of Agriculture, Agung Suganda, personally oversaw the arrival of the sheep and goats. The shipment consists of 400 Dorper sheep and 200 Saanen dairy goats.
The animals were brought in by PT Samana Agri Yasa and are scheduled to be sent to a quarantine facility in Cilacap, Central Java. "These livestock belong to PT Samana Agri Yasa and are set to be transported to the quarantine installation in Cilacap," Agung stated in a written announcement on Wednesday.
In addition to the sheep and dairy goats, Indonesia also received 50 pregnant Friesian Holstein (FH) dairy cows at Soekarno-Hatta Airport during the same event. These cows will be developed by PT Juang Jaya Abdi Alam in Lampung.
The imported cows are already pregnant, with gestation periods ranging from 3 to 7 months. The arrival of these pregnant dairy cows, along with the sheep and goats, represents a significant step towards accelerating national dairy investment and supporting the free nutritious meal program. The government under President Prabowo Subianto plans to implement this free nutritious meal initiative, starting at 932 locations on January 2, 2025.
The statement was made by the Head of the National Nutrition Agency, Dadan Hindayana, during his address at the National Food Symposium themed “Free Nutritious Meal Program as a Catalyst for Transforming a Resilient Food System Based on Functional Food Potential and Local-National Wisdom” held at Indofood Tower, Jakarta, on Monday, November 25, 2024.
“God willing, in January 2025, we will implement the program on a large scale, starting from 932 locations. This will expand to 2,000 locations by April 2025, and further grow to 5,000 locations by July-August 2025,” Dadan stated. He noted that the program aims to reach 82.9 million beneficiaries, including school children, pregnant women, nursing mothers, and children under five years old. (ferry@insightinnews.com)
