House Of Representatives Sets Up Intelligence Monitoring Team

The Chairperson of the People's Consultative Assembly (DPR) of the Republic of Indonesia, Puan Maharani, inaugurated the DPR's intelligence oversight team on Tuesday, December 3, 2024, in the Meeting Room of Commission I, located within the Parliament Complex in Senayan, Jakarta. The establishment of this oversight team is a follow-up to Law Number 17 of 2011 concerning State Intelligence. According to Article 43, paragraph (2), external oversight of state intelligence operations is conducted by a specific commission within the DPR that focuses on intelligence matters.

The oversight team will operate under the coordination of the Deputy Chairperson of the DPR for political and security affairs, Sufmi Dasco Ahmad. Puan emphasized the necessity of synergy and coordination among all relevant parties to ensure the effective development of the nation without misunderstandings.

Puan indicated that the DPR's intelligence oversight team will assist the duties of council members who represent the populace. In this capacity, the team will monitor the performance of state intelligence to ensure it adheres to its primary responsibilities and functions. The role of intelligence is to detect, identify, analyze, interpret, and present intelligence information to provide early warnings. This function is essential as a precautionary measure against threats that could jeopardize national safety. (srirahayu@insightinnews.com)

It is hoped that the team will collaborate effectively with agencies responsible for intelligence tasks, including the National Intelligence Agency (BIN), the Strategic Intelligence Agency of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (BAIS TNI), and the Intelligence and Security Agency of the Indonesian National Police (Baintelkam Polri). This collaboration aims to foster public trust in the agencies handling state secrets. Puan reiterated the importance of synergy and coordination among all stakeholders to build the nation without misunderstandings.

The intelligence oversight team of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) is composed of members from Commission I, which is responsible for defense, foreign affairs, communication and informatics, as well as intelligence matters. The team will consist of six leaders and eight members who will collaborate to carry out oversight functions.

The following is the composition of the intelligence oversight team of the DPR RI:
