Government Will Have Authority To Build Irrigation For Thousands Of Hectares

Wednesday, 04 Dec 2024

The central government will assist in the construction of irrigation facilities on agricultural land ranging from 1,000 to 3,000 hectares. This announcement was made by Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs Zulkifli Hasan during the Sarasehan 100 Indonesian Economists event organized by INDEF in Jakarta on Tuesday, December 3.

"The central government can also undertake construction if we have a budget for 1,000 hectares, 2,000 hectares, or 3,000 hectares of rice fields. That can be accomplished," stated Zulkifli Hasan.

He elaborated that previous regulations only permitted local governments, specifically governors or regents, to manage the development of irrigation in these areas. However, the new regulation allows the central government to play a role in this process.

Additionally, Zulkifli mentioned that a budget of IDR 19 trillion will continue to be allocated to local governments for the development of irrigation infrastructure that supports the agricultural sector.

"There is a budget of IDR 19 trillion for regions across Indonesia for the development of irrigation related to agriculture," Zulkifli added.

Furthermore, the central government will also take over the management of agricultural extension workers, who were previously distributed across various districts.

"Regarding the agricultural extension workers currently spread across the districts, they will become central civil servants, thus becoming central extension workers. They will not only focus on rice or paddy but will also cover a broader range of agricultural food," he concluded. (srirahayu@insightinnews.com)
