Xinyi Group To Invest Rp 281 Trillion In Rempang Eco City

Tuesday, 03 Dec 2024

The Secretary of the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Batam Free Trade Zone Authority, Susiwijono Moegiarso, expressed hope that the situation in Rempang remains conducive. Previously, the National Strategic Project of Rempang Eco City faced opposition from residents, leading to agrarian conflicts.

According to Susiwijono, a secure environment is a key factor for attracting foreign investors, particularly the Xinyi Group, which is expected to invest approximately IDR 381 trillion.

"Xinyi is also investing in the Special Economic Zone (KEK) in Gresik, so we hope that the situation in Batam will not be disrupted by any issues," Susiwijono stated at the Senayan Parliament Complex in Jakarta on Monday, December 2, 2024.

He noted that addressing the relocation of residents' land is a primary focus for BP Batam and the government. This year, around 350 housing units for those affected by the project are set to be constructed, with a target of completing 961 housing units by 2025.

The housing development this year is in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing. Due to a change in the ministry's nomenclature, BP Batam will continue the project. "We must ensure completion, as they are being relocated, provided with land, homes, and all necessary infrastructure," he emphasized.

Sudirman Saad, a member of the Area Management and Investment Division of BP Batam, stated that the agency has been tasked by the government with providing land for investment and addressing the needs of affected residents. The agency has coordinated with the developer, PT Makmur Elok Graha, for the initial phase of land provision, covering an area of 2,370 hectares.

Approximately 90 percent of the land, according to him, is classified as conversion production forest or HPK. For conversion forests, the process of land release involves changing the status of HPK to another land use category. In that area, there are also 961 households affected.

Before the DPR, Sudirman indicated that the dynamics on the ground have made the development of the project less straightforward than anticipated. "This led to the events of September 2023," he stated.

In September 2023, a conflict arose between the developers and residents opposing the presence of the national strategic project (PSN). Currently, out of the 961 households, Sudirman claims that 231 have registered for relocation. A total of 41 households have already moved into permanent housing provided by BP Batam in Kampung Tanjung Banun, Pulau Galang, Riau Islands. He expressed hope that all housing for the affected residents will be completed by next year. (ferry@insightinnews.com)
