US Ambassador: Indonesia Is An Important Partner In The International Community

Tuesday, 26 Nov 2024

The United States (US) will continue to enhance its collaboration with Indonesia, recognizing its status as a significant partner in the international arena.

US Ambassador to Indonesia, Kamala Shirin Lakhdhir, stated that with its dynamic economy, strategic location, abundant natural resources, and democratic values, Indonesia is well-positioned to influence important regional and global priorities.

"As the fourth most populous country in the world and a member of the G20, we welcome Indonesia's leadership in multilateral and regional forums to advance sustainable, inclusive, and resilient economic growth," she remarked during the US-Indonesia Investment Summit 2024 in Jakarta on Tuesday, November 26, 2024.

Lakhdhir emphasized that the US is committed to further strengthening cooperation with Indonesia moving forward, particularly in trade. She noted that the total bilateral trade in agriculture between Indonesia and the US reached $7 billion last year.

She further mentioned that the US is exploring various avenues to expand trade, including through the Trade and Investment Framework Agreement meetings scheduled for 2025.

By conducting regular bilateral trade consultations, Lakhdhir stated that the United States can create a more favorable environment for American and Indonesian businesses to grow and innovate.

"We also support Indonesia's accession to the OECD, an initiative that will enhance Indonesia's regulatory environment and lead to economic growth through increased trade and investment," he added.

Simultaneously, the United States is working to address the barriers faced when investing in Indonesia. He noted that these obstacles typically arise in technology and investment in key sectors such as agriculture and healthcare.

"Barriers such as local content requirements, import restrictions, and complex and indirect regulatory processes not only hinder trade and investment but also limit Indonesia's ability to achieve its goals of growing and diversifying its economy," Lakhdhir remarked.

He emphasized that enhanced collaboration between the U.S. and Indonesia in these areas would unlock significant potential, fostering mutual prosperity for both nations and realizing Indonesia's Golden Vision 2045, which encompasses a dynamic and inclusive economy. (srirahayu@insightinnews.com)
