Defense Minister: President Agrees To Set Up National Defense Council

Tuesday, 26 Nov 2024

Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin has announced that President Prabowo Subianto is set to sign a presidential regulation concerning the establishment of the National Defense Council.

"Yes, a presidential regulation for the National Defense Council will be issued," stated Sjafrie at the Parliament Complex in Jakarta on Monday, November 25.

Sjafrie elaborated that the formation of the National Defense Council is a standard procedure and is governed by the Defense Law. He noted that the mandate of the law to establish the National Defense Council has yet to be fulfilled.

"Therefore, it should not be misinterpreted. The National Defense Council is included in the mandate of the Defense Law; it simply has not been established yet," he explained. The Defense Law outlines the provisions regarding the National Defense Council in Article 15, which is tasked with assisting the President in managing the national defense system.

"The National Defense Council, as referred to in paragraph (1), serves as an advisor to the President in determining general defense policies and mobilizing all components of national defense," states paragraph 2 of Article 15.

Furthermore, paragraph (4) of Article 15 stipulates that the National Defense Council is directly led by the President and comprises both permanent and non-permanent members.

The permanent members include the Vice President, the Minister of Defense, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Minister of Home Affairs, and the Commander. "The non-permanent members consist of government and non-government officials deemed necessary in accordance with the issues at hand," states paragraph 6 of the article.

All permanent and non-permanent members of the National Defense Council are also appointed directly by the President through a presidential regulation. (srirahayu@insightinnews.com)
