The Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs, Meutya Hafid, has officially appointed Brigadier General Alexander Sabar of the Indonesian National Police as the Acting Director General of Digital Space Oversight at the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs.

It is important to note that the Ministry is currently undergoing a reorganization of its structure to address the challenges of the digital era ahead. Previously known as the Ministry of Communication and Information (Kominfo), it had four directorates: the Directorate General of Informatics Applications (Ditjen Aptika), the Directorate General of Postal and Informatics Services (Ditjen PPI), the Directorate General of Resources and Postal and Informatics Devices (Ditjen SDPPI), and the Directorate General of Public Information and Communication (Ditjen IKP).

With the transition from Kominfo to Komdigi, the directorates and their functions have also evolved into the Directorate General of Digital Infrastructure, the Directorate General of Digital Government Technology, the Directorate General of Digital Ecosystem, the Directorate General of Digital Space Oversight, and the Directorate General of Public Communication and Media.

Meutya emphasized that the appointment of Brigadier General Alexander, who has a background in law enforcement, cyber oversight, and handling digital crime cases, is part of the effort to tackle the challenges of the current digital era.

She noted that these challenges include data theft, the dissemination of illegal content, and online gambling, which require close collaboration among agencies, particularly with law enforcement authorities.

Collaboration between the Ministry of Communication and Digital (Komdigi) and law enforcement agencies is essential, particularly in critical situations such as the current one, to address increasingly complex digital threats, especially concerning online gambling that significantly harms society, stated Minister of Communication and Digital Meutya Hafid to detikINET on Monday, November 25, 2024.

This assignment is an implementation of Presidential Regulation Number 174 of 2024 regarding the Ministry of Communication and Digital, reflecting the ministry's nomenclature changes in response to the dynamics and challenges of the current digital transformation era, which has led to the establishment of a new directorate overseeing crimes in the digital space.

Minister Meutya Hafid expressed hope that the appointment of Brigadier General Alexander would expedite efforts to cleanse the Ministry of Communication and Digital from digital crime threats while simultaneously enhancing public trust in the security of the digital environment in Indonesia.

Brigadier General Alexander Sabar was appointed based on the Chief of Police's Decree numbered Sprin/3346/XI/KEP./2024 dated November 18, 2024, which directs Brigadier General Alexander Sabar, S.I.K., M.H., currently serving at the National Narcotics Agency (BNN), to undertake the role of Director General for Digital Space Oversight.
