Komdigi: Hoax In 2024 Election Down By 70%

Tuesday, 26 Nov 2024

The Ministry of Communication and Digital (Kemkomdigi) has reported a decline and control of hoaxes in the digital space concerning the 2024 simultaneous Regional Head Elections (Pilkada), attributed to effective oversight involving multiple stakeholders.

This statement was made by Prabunindya Revta Revolusi, the Director General of Public Information and Communication (Dirjen IKP) at Kemkomdigi, who noted that the stakeholders include government entities, digital platforms, and the public.

"There has been a significant decrease in hoax issues related to the 2024 Pilkada. Compared to the campaign period for the Presidential Election (November 2023-February 2024), the hoax narratives circulating in society have diminished considerably following the joint declaration with platforms, leading to a notable reduction in such issues to date," Prabu stated.

According to data from Kemkomdigi, from January 2023 to November 18, 2024, there were 379 identified hoax issues related to the elections. A substantial number of these were recorded in the lead-up to the Presidential Election (Pilpres) 2024, with a total of 200 hoax issues emerging from October 2023 to February 2024.

After the conclusion of the Pilpres 2024, the prevalence of election-related hoaxes has been observed to decline, particularly as the 2024 Pilkada approaches. From August 2024 to November 18, 2024, there were 22 hoax issues identified concerning the elections, including the simultaneous Pilkada. This comprised 7 hoax issues in August 2024, 3 in September 2024, 8 in October 2024, and 4 up to November 18, 2024.

"It is our responsibility, in collaboration with other ministries and agencies involved in the cybersecurity desk, to monitor these issues. We conduct daily cyber patrols. However, the effectiveness of this effort is significantly enhanced by public participation in monitoring hoax issues alongside the government," Prabu added.

Prabu indicated that digital platforms each have their own commitments and are paying special attention to issues related to hoaxes concerning the regional elections, ensuring that the 2024 elections can proceed in a conducive and secure manner.

In addition to monitoring hoaxes in the digital space, the Ministry of Communication and Digital (Kemkomdigi) is preparing several mechanisms to foster a peaceful 2024 regional election in Indonesia.

On Thursday, November 7, Minister of Communication and Digital Meutya Hafid announced that the ministry has developed five programs to support the Peaceful Regional Election Campaign for 2024.

"We have established five key programs for the Peaceful Regional Election Campaign 2024, which include SMS blasts and a digital media ecosystem, monitoring and oversight of the radio frequency spectrum (SFR), logistical support, safeguarding the digital space, and public communication," Meutya stated in an official announcement.
