Shell Indonesia denies plans to close all its gas stations in the country. Susi Hutapea, Vice President of Corporate Relations at Shell Indonesia, confirmed that rumors about shutting down Shell gas stations are false. "Shell Indonesia clarifies that the information circulating about plans to close all gas stations in Indonesia is not true," she stated.
Since Saturday, November 23, 2024, there have been many reports about Shell closing its gas stations, linked to the retail fuel distribution business in Indonesia. Susi emphasized that the company is still focused on operating its gas stations.
However, she did not want to comment further on market speculation. "We cannot comment on market speculation. Shell Indonesia remains focused on operating gas stations for our customers," she said.
In the downstream sector, Shell Indonesia serves the market for businesses and motor vehicle drivers. The company also manages marketing and trading of lubricants directly and through appointed distributors. With over 300 employees, Shell has established more than 170 gas stations across Greater Jakarta, Bandung, East Java, and North Sumatra.
Despite Shell clarification, an Insightinnews source suggests that Shell may indeed close all its gas stations in Indonesia. This is partly because Shell no longer owns a refinery after Chandra Asri Group and Glencore plc signed a Purchase Agreement with Shell Singapore Pte. Ltd (SSPL) to acquire all its ownership in Shell Energy and Chemicals Park Singapore (SECP) in May 2024. (putri@insightinnews.com)
