By ridwan@insightinnews.com The Ministry of Communication and Digital (Komdigi) has urged social media platforms to take an active role in combating the increasing prevalence of online gambling in Indonesia. Minister Meutya Hafid stated that her office, in collaboration with the Financial Services Authority (OJK), recognizes that many digital crimes, including online gambling, often originate from social media applications. "We would like to extend our apologies to Meta, TikTok, X, Instagram, and other platforms for their involvement in assisting Indonesia in the fight against online gambling. This is a responsibility," Meutya remarked during a press conference on Thursday, November 14. However, she revealed that Komdigi has not yet engaged in direct coordination with the relevant social media platform providers, despite this being a direct directive from President Prabowo Subianto. She further noted that there has been no proactive approach from the platforms, even though the President has made a statement regarding this issue. "There has not been any proactive initiative from them, despite the President's communication. Neither with the President nor with us has there been any contact," Meutya explained. Moreover, Meutya emphasized that the eradication of online gambling through social media is not only a government aspiration but also a desire of the Indonesian people. Therefore, social media platforms are expected to contribute to this effort. "We urge all social media platforms that benefit from the vast market in Indonesia to participate in this initiative," Meutya concluded.
