Menkomdigi AI Center To Be Established In Jayapura Early Next Year

, 24 Nov 2024

By reza@insightinnews.com The Minister of Communication and Digital (Menkomdigi), Meutia Hafid, announced that an Artificial Intelligence Center (AI Center) will be established in Jayapura, Papua, in early 2025. This information was shared by Meutia during her speech at the Indonesia AI Day 2024 event held in Jakarta on Thursday, November 14, 2024. She indicated that this information was obtained during a discussion with Vikram Sinha, the CEO of Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison. "I would like to announce here that Mr. Vikram aims for the AI Center to be operational in January or February in Jayapura, Papua," Meutia stated. She emphasized that the establishment of the AI Center is part of the effort to support the national AI ecosystem. Meutia highlighted the government's focus on three key aspects, referred to as the 3Ps: policy, people, and platform. The policy aspect aims to bridge the policy gap, provide legal certainty, and yet not hinder the potential for innovation. "There are two approaches to viewing the governance policy of national AI: a horizontal approach that is general and applicable to all sectors utilizing AI technology, and a vertical approach that is sector-specific, allowing each sector to establish its own specific regulations," Meutia explained. In the subsequent discussion regarding the people aspect, the government is concentrating on the development of human resources (HR). One manifestation of this effort is the collaboration between Komdigi and higher education institutions, as well as associations, through the digital talent scholarship program. This initiative aims to enhance the skills and competitiveness of digital human resources, particularly in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). The establishment of the AI Center, as noted by Meutia, falls within this domain. "We will focus on creating diverse technology adoptions that can foster collaboration among stakeholders to present an inclusive AI ecosystem. Ultimately, I invite all of us to come together. First and foremost, let us utilize AI for the greater good," stated Meutia. "Let us harness this artificial intelligence to address social issues, improve quality of life, and drive innovation. We will also encourage collective efforts to develop digital talent. It is essential to prepare the younger generation with adequate skills to navigate the AI era, and I urge everyone to work together in building a healthy AI ecosystem," she emphasized. It is noteworthy that the establishment of the AI Center is not the first of its kind in Indonesia. Previously, Universitas Kristen Indonesia (UKI) collaborated with a leading university in the United States, the University of Southern California (USC), to create a university-based AI Center in Indonesia. The objective of this AI Center is to foster AI literacy among the Indonesian populace, starting with the students of UKI. Edwin Soeryadjaya, the head of the Yayasan Universitas Kristen Indonesia, expressed great enthusiasm for collaborating with the University of Southern California (USC), which is recognized as a global leader in the development and application of AI for education and research
