The Minister of State-Owned Enterprises, Erick Thohir, has appointed Wamildan Tsani Panjaitan as the President Director of PT Garuda Indonesia (Persero) Tbk (GIAA), succeeding Irfan Setiaputra. Wamildan, who previously served as the Acting President Director of Lion Air, had recently indicated his potential appointment as the President Director of Garuda Indonesia. This was even announced by Wamildan through a social media post showcasing moments from his meetings with Erick Thohir. The Extraordinary General Meeting of Shareholders (EGMS) for Garuda Indonesia convened today, Friday, November 15, 2024, and officially decided to appoint Wamildan as the President Director of Garuda Indonesia. "Prior to his assignment at Garuda Indonesia, Capt. Wamildan Tsani Panjaitan held the position of Acting CEO at PT Lion Air, a role he has occupied since 2022," as stated in the official announcement from Garuda Indonesia on Friday, November 15, 2024. For context, Wamildan, born in Wamena in 1981 and raised in Jayapura, graduated from Taruna Nusantara High School in 1998 and continued his education at the Air Force Academy, graduating from the Air Force Flying School in 2003. He has also completed several professional training programs, including the Aviation Medicine Course from the Republic of Singapore Air Force (2007), the Instructor Course from the Royal Australian Air Force (2008), and the Squadron Officer School at the US Air Force (2011). Wamildan began his aviation career as a pilot in Makassar, where he spent a decade operating Boeing 737 Patrol Aircraft. He was later transferred to Yogyakarta to serve as an instructor at the Flight School, where he spent the remainder of his career until early retirement. Subsequently, he joined Lion Group and took on the role of Acting President Director of Lion Air in 2023, after serving as the Director of Safety, Security, and Quality for Lion Air/Batik Air.
